Special Recognition for Sustainable Practices Winners & Runners-Up

The CHI’24 sustainability committee received a number of strong submissions for the Special Recognition for Sustainable Practice, and we are excited to announce the winners. After considering all the submissions, we recognized projects based on two tracks: (i) Research with Potential for Sustainable Impact and (ii) Research Teams with Inspirational Research Practices. For each category, a winner and runner-up were selected. Without further ado:

For Research with Potential for Sustainable Impact:

  • [Winner] SolderlessPCB: Reusing Electronic Components in PCB Prototyping through Detachable 3D Printed Housings. Zeyu Yan, Jiasheng Li, Zining Zhang, and Huaishu Peng (University of Maryland). Selected for its high potential to increase the sustainable reuse of electronic components in research, industry, and hobbyist electronics projects and prototyping.
  • [Runner-up] Ecothreads: Prototyping Biodegradable E-textiles Through Thread-based Fabrication. Jingwen Zhu, Lily Winagle, and Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao (Cornell University). Selected for demonstrating the development and use of biodegradable material suitable for e-textiles and compatible with various fabrication processes (e.g., CNC machines), which has the potential to impact the way we develop future e-textile projects with sustainability in mind.

For Research Teams with Inspirational Research Practices:

  • [Winner] Learning About Social Context From Smartphone Data: Generalization Across Countries and Daily Life Moments. Aurel Rubem Mäder, Lakmal Meegahapola, and Daniel Gatica-Perez (Idiap Research Institute, EPFL). Selected for use of virtual and hybrid meetings as routine during- and post-pandemic. Further, connection to the European WENET project makes this project stand out as building social connections that cross geographic and cultural boundaries speaks to broader definitions of sustainability.
  • [Runner-up] ShareYourReality: Investigating Haptic Feedback and Agency in Virtual Avatar Co-embodiment. Karthikeya Puttr Venkatraj, Wo Meijer, Monica Perusquia-Hernandez, Gijs Huisman, and Abdallah El Ali (Various). Selected for the reuse of research materials/equipment already available at the university instead of purchasing new items to run the study that borrowed what they needed.

Congratulations to our winners and runner-up, and thank you to everyone who shared their work with us. If you wish to learn more about this projects, please look for them in the CHI’24 program; the projects receiving these recognitions have been indicated in the program as well.

Jordan Aiko Deja, Aimée Sousa Calepso and Martina Schuß, CHI 2024 Global Plaza Chairs

In the conference’s recent editions, the CHI Conferences organizers have introduced the Global Inclusion and Equity Initiative (also known as Global Plaza) to make the conference one step closer to being more welcoming to newcomers and inclusive to all. The organizers recognize that participants, especially those from the Global South, experience additional challenges and need extra support to join and participate with the broader CHI community. In this edition, Global Inclusion and Equity is even more emphasized given the location of the conference.

In response to this, the CHI 2024 Global Inclusion and Equity Chairs present to you again the 2024 edition of Global Plaza as part of the CHI Conference.

We invite you to continue reading below to find out more about this initiative.

The success of the previous edition

The CHI 2022 organizing committee had the vision to make the flagship conference of SIGCHI their most inclusive and equitable version yet. And to achieve that goal the Global Inclusion and Equity Initiative was formed. The team was formed by Susan Dray, Annu Sible Prabhakar, Cuauhtemoc Rivera-Loaiza, Marisol Wong-Villacres and Eiad Yafi, with the invaluable collaboration of Jones Yeboah. The main result of this initiative was the Global Plaza (GP) project, which had as its main objective to provide a space (whether it was virtual or physical), for the exchange of ideas and fostering cross-collaboration between all attendees.

It was a resounding success, with more than 150 attendees to all the sessions, most of them over Zoom, and one on-site. In every session there was an evident demand of having this type of space available for everyone to join in. We hope that GP can become a tradition in all CHI conferences going forward. And this 2024, we intend to continue this initiative further.

What’s in store for this year

One of the Global Plaza goals is to make the conference more inclusive to those who need it and to provide a welcoming environment to those from underrepresented backgrounds. We have prepared the following events for you in this edition which will take place both in-person and virtually:

  • Showcase research from Student (Game/Design/Research) Competitions.
  • Language-Exchange and Language-specific sessions (we have expanded our language and region-specific sessions to more languages. See below.)
  • Conversations with SIGCHI executive members and researchers from other regions
  • Opportunities for collaboration and networking with chapters and researchers in nearby regions

Schedule of Sessions

Global Plaza will take place in several (and multiple Language-Specific) sessions this year. Everyone at CHI is welcome to join these sessions. Global Plaza will take place at Pakaloka “Charlot” Courtyard Back.  The sessions are hybrid so even those who are not physically present can interact with in-person attendees during the sessions.  Given that CHI 24 is happening in Hawai’i, we did our best to find the time zones that can best accommodate various groups across the globe.

Support and Funding

We are working closely with the different funding mechanisms to be able to help those experiencing challenges in participating in the CHI Conference. We are currently working on securing support such as:

  • Helping the young researchers to acquire their SIGCHI membership so they can apply for GMTA and get discounts when registering (especially for those coming from developing countries).
  • Support for registration (both virtual and in-person).

How to Apply for Support

The Global Plaza Chairs are constantly seeking newer ways to help and support those who experience challenges participating in the CHI community. If you encounter specific difficulties or challenges, we invite you to submit them through these forms. If these forms do not address your issues, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at global@chi2024.acm.org.

I need Support: Click this link.

How Can I Help?

In the spirit of building bridges and nurturing connections, the Global Plaza initiative is also open for more volunteers who are willing to extend a helping hand in making the CHI Conference more globally inclusive. If you would like to volunteer at activities such as helping virtual attendants feel welcome at Global Plaza, spreading the word about this event, leading sessions in your native language, or have any new ideas for the event, please reach out to us via email at global@chi2024.acm.org.

Artifacts at CHI 2024

How we gather metadata about artifacts associated with CHI 2024 Papers, like datasets, software, and experimental protocols, is changing in order to make these artifacts more visible and discoverable alongside our published papers.  In the past, we collected artifacts as a single compressed file called supplements, which had limited metadata, limited discoverability, and inconsistent structure.  ACM’s new artifact workflow is a significant step forward in more effectively archiving the artifacts that underpin our publications.

Archiving artifacts

Archiving artifacts alongside our publications is important to improving the transparency, reusability, and extensibility of our work.  We encourage all authors who have research artifacts to upload them using the Final Submission form in PCS, even if the artifact also exists in an online repository like GitHub, BitBucket, or institutional repositories.  Uploading artifacts alongside your paper ensures that these artifacts will be permanently archived in the ACM Digital Library, provides an archival snapshot of your artifact at the time of publication, and makes this discoverable in the same place as your publication.  You can still include links to external repositories, but archiving your artifacts alongside your publications adds additional discoverability and ensures permanent availability. If you have files that exceed upload limits, these can be processed by contacting publications@chi2024.acm.org.

New Artifact Metadata

When you submit your publication-ready materials for CHI 2024 papers, you’ll see new fields in the Final Submission form for uploading your artifacts.  Provide each artifact individually, including the type for each file from the dropdown menu in PCS.  If you have more than five artifacts, please contact publications@chi2024.acm.org for assistance. In 2024, we will support Video, Audio, Software, Datasets, Presentation Slides, and Other artifact types.

Video

You can upload additional video artifacts, which are different to the video presentation and video preview you can already provide.  This could be a video demonstration of a hardware prototype, a video walkthrough of a virtual world, or any other videos that underpin your publication.

Audio

You can upload audio files as artifacts that support your publication.  This could be recordings of sounds critical to your paper, audio recordings of oral data, or any other audio that underpins your publication.

Software

You can upload the software that supports your publication.  This could be experimental software, software that runs simulations, code that reproduces analysis, or any other software artifact that underpins your publication.

Datasets

You can upload datasets that support your publication.  This could be logs from empirical work, data used in your analysis, transcripts, or any other data that underpins your publication.

Presentation Slides

You can upload presentation slides that support your publication.  This could be the presentation which you will give at the conference, or any presentation that underpins your publication.

Other

There are many artifacts not covered by the current categories supported by ACM, but that are still valuable to include with your publication.  This could be survey and interview protocols, details of experiment pre-registration, technical diagrams like CAD files, 3D models, or any other artifact that underpins your publication.

Artifact Available Badges

Image of the available artefact badge

Any author who provides artifacts using the form in PCS will be awarded an Artifact Available badge for their CHI 2024 paper.  The artifact Available badge asserts that author created artifacts relevant to the publication are available in an archival repository. These badges are not externally reviewed, and do not need to be comprehensive how they underpin the associated publication. Papers with the “artifact Available” badge include this icon in the ACM Digital Library, are searchable and filterable by this badge, and have this metadata embedded within the article landing page to improve discoverability.

The Future of Artifacts at CHI

This new artifact metadata is just the first step towards a better approach to how we archive, disseminate, and use the artifacts associated with CHI publications.  There is still a lot of work to keep improving how we archive these artifacts.

For example, it’s not clear what artifacts look across the diverse kinds of contributions that have a home at CHI.  Not all methods or applications areas have obvious artifacts or open science practices already established.  Some research is tightly coupled with confidentiality and may require new and creative approaches to make open artifacts possible  However, this is an opportunity for everyone to take a holistic look at what artifacts they produce, how these can be meaningfully prepared for sharing and reuse, and what open science looks like for their work.

One of the most common artifacts in the ACM Digital Library is software, but this is a complex and changing space when it comes to archiving and sharing software and code.  There are a lot of open challenges around portability, changing hardware and software dependencies over time, and often limited resources to package software for reuse.  Ensuring long term functioning and usability of software artifact is still an open and active area of work.

We hope this expanding functionality around artifacts can encourage the already established movement of open science, and help our community to consider broadly what open science looks like for our work.
